Determining factors in graduate recruitment and preparing students for success

Purpose This study aims to investigate graduate employer perceptions of determining factors in recruitment decisions and their preferred use channels. drew on the employability capitals model interpret findings identify ways better prepare higher education students for selection. is particularly important declining labour markets, further weakened by COVID-19. Design/methodology/approach gathered data from surveying 183 Australian employers different organisational settings. Responses were analysed using descriptive multivariate techniques, latter exploring variations role type, sector organisation size. Findings reaffirmed criticality having right disposition demonstrating professional capabilities during recruitment, highlighting value building cultural human capital university years. Recruitment channels that require mobilise identity social prioritised, among private organisations. Work-based internships/placements considered identifying talent developing strong industry–educator partnerships, needed networks between employers. Originality/value provides valuable insights into determinants decision-making perspective. These highlight capitals, how they can be developed optimise success. presents practical strategies universities build students’ human, social, capital. prioritisation sectors will enable future recruitment. It emphasises student engagement with employability-related activities a critical resource an effective transition workplace.
